Saint Pete’s is full of the fun and the funky, of the unusual and the unexpected. Here’s just a small sampling:
Lions and Boobs
Those are the predominant themes in architectural decoration in this city. One signifies might, another …I’ve got nothing. I guess breasts are just generally a good thing?
Museum of Curiosities
There’s more to to Russia’s very first Natural Science collection than pickled humans and their parts (although there’s plenty of that too, enjoyed by the visitors of all ages). Peter the Great’s Kunstkamera is now part of the Anthropology and Ethnography Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Academy itself was established by Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov — “Russian polymath, scientist and writer, who made important contributions to literature, education, and science,” per Wiki — in the 18th century. The museum has a special exhibit devoted to the man, as well to the Academy’s fascinating past.
Salmon Cream Soup
Now, this is a city on the sea. Seafood is their thing. And it seems that salmon cream soup is THE thing. Prior to my StP trip I had never even heard of it. While in the city I had seen it on most restaurant menus. It is DELICIOUS. Straight up comfort food with Nordic flare.
Street Art, Street People
From bright butterflies in dim courtyards to the sparrows drunk on vodka to vagabonds with a sense of humor, even on the most gloomy day Saint Petersburg does not fail to make you smile.
Love that little kitteh next to all the cables/wires 😉
I notice a distinct lack of cakes. Pls tell me you’ve got some coming…
Um…I did not have any dessert while there. BUT. I did have this last weekend http://instagram.com/p/lkRyJ7g_dv/
Pretty! But… seriously, you went somewhere without eating a single dessert…?
I’m going to sit in a corner now and rock gently back and forth.
You can make up for my lost time 🙂
I really dont do sweets much… for me to be really down w a dessert it has to be very bready.
Bread and butter pudding. It’s a British thing. You’d love that.
The pickled babies and salmon soup nearly put me off my sausage. 😉
The animal print coat saved the day though!
It’s the Latvian in you 😉
When I get back to Moscow topics (also – sleep), there’s a post I have just for you.
Ooh I’m excited! Someone called me a Russian fascist today on my blog… Ummm.
Jesus – WHY?
Who knows?! Weirdos 😉
Probably your affiliation with me?
More likely just a twat with a computer 🙂
I was enjoying your pictures until the salmon soup…bleh. Just wrong. Reminds me of the first (and only) time I ever had chilled soup and, having taken a large spoonful, was completely unable to swallow it. As politely as I could, I dribbled it back out onto the spoon. I think I would have to do the same with salmon soup 😉
Oh, so pickled babies are ok? 😉
I ordered the soup every time I saw it on the menu. I will ALSO have a post on just salmon. And my love of it.
Lions and boobs. What greater combination could there be?! Great pictures, as always!
Thank you! I hope people haven’t OD’d on them (esp bc I know I should be editing them down tighter), there’s only one more StP pictorial to go!
Yeah, but…..who doesn’t love a nice rack ::coughYOUcough::
Why do you think there are so many photos 😉
I am naming my next book “Lion and Boobs”
Am I the the spunky but brilliant protagonist?
